Patricia Mueller
In Memoriam (Past Vice-Chair)
"Miss Pat" will forever remain a major part of the Open Door America story even though we lost her in 2019. In addition to serving as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors, Pat volunteered in the office three days a week for a decade, applying her incredible social worker and family therapist skills in our family services operations. She was the lead architect of our case management methodology called the Individual Life Plan (ILP). In truth, Pat was part of every good thing ever accomplished by ODA. She was a dear friend who loved the people of East Baltimore. Her impact on young families, especially young mothers, cannot be overstated. With her down-home East Tennessee wit and charm, Pat made the world a better place every day. With heaven's permission, we continue to claim Miss Pat as one of our own.

The Reverse Engineers of Poverty
BALTIMORE 15 YEARS AGO — Weaving our way through the chaotic streets of East Baltimore scrupulously plotting which corners to avoid at all costs after dark, we were unintentional co-conspirators in the life and death struggles of people we would never meet. Every choice we made dripped with sad, unintended consequences.
Buoyed by simple aspirations of an awakened America, we were intent on creating a renaissance vanguard one block at a time. Home to 300 murders a year and an unflinching poverty rate of 30 percent, we elected to see Baltimore as a city of endless possibilities. We believed in her people. Even in the early 2000s, the fearless optimism of the 1960s still seeded our thoughts and actions amidst unbelievable pain and despair.
